About Varig
Varig joined World Aviation Systems in October 1994 and is represented throughout Australia.
VRG, the airline operating under VARIG’s brand, was acquired in April 2007 by GOL, Brazil’s low-cost, low-fare airline. Since beginning operations in January 2001, GOL has popularized air transportation throughout Brazil and South America, transporting more than 63 million passengers and achieving 39% of the domestic market share in Brazil.
Through this acquisition, VARIG will be equipped to resume operations in the international market with other major airlines. The Company is incorporating GOL’s low-cost management model, which will instill innovation in VARIG’s operations, revitalize the brand and improve the quality of services offered. Under this new operating model, VARIG plans to increase its international routes and expand its seat offering.
GOL and VRG will be managed as independent companies with focused business models, but will work together to increase the efficiency, quality and competitiveness that has marked GOL’s success over the last six years. GOL’s strong financial results make the Company one of the world’s most profitable low-cost, low-fare airlines and one of the most valuable brands in the Brazilian market.
VARIG will provide direct flights and offer differentiated services, with two service classes—coach and business—on long-haul international flights. VARIG will continue to operate and improve its frequent flyer program, Smiles, which currently serves more than 6 million clients.
“Our differentiated service offering will have a strong focus on comfort and on high-quality customer service, which we are constantly striving to improve. We expect to resume operations to our international destinations in the coming months, providing customers with more options for affordable travel,” says Lincoln Amano, Commercial Director of VARIG.
